Fly Fishing the Routeburn

Digital Imaging Ambassador
Fiordland is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, from Milford Sound’s cliffs to its vast wilderness, and it’s also home to world-class fly fishing. With crystal-clear rivers winding through untouched terrain, it’s a paradise for both anglers and photographers. Recently, I spent time on the Routeburn River, capturing fly fishing in one of New Zealand’s most remote and scenic locations.

The Routeburn River, flowing through Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Park, is a prime spot for backcountry fly fishing. As part of one of New Zealand’s most famous Great Walks, the area offers breathtaking scenery and an incredible fishing experience. The water clarity is exceptional—so clear you can spot trout moving through the currents. With a mix of deep pools and fast runs, it’s home to healthy populations of brown and rainbow trout, making it perfect for those seeking a true wilderness experience.
While the water’s tropical-like colours were striking, the cold temperatures reminded me of Fiordland’s ruggedness. To capture the unique perspective of the river, I used a water housing, shooting half-submerged angles that showcased both the movement of the water and the stunning landscape. The Routeburn’s clarity highlights how light interacts with the currents and the reflections of the surrounding trees.

The Routeburn was an unreal spot to shoot—capturing such an untouched place was a privilege. Next time, though, I’ll be hoping for a big trout to go with it!
